Plan New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen

Our selected partners. Always check the cancellation terms for your dates.

New Year’s Eve for couples

For couples, the key choice is whether you want dinner and midnight in the same place, or dinner first and then the streets. The first gives you calm and a fixed seat. The second gives more atmosphere, but also crowds and private fireworks close by.

Nyhavns Færgekro: dinner, then out on the quay

Nyhavns Færgekro has two seatings on 31 December 2026: three courses from 17:00 to 19:30 for DKK 755 per person, and the “Full Night” from 20:00 to 23:45 for DKK 1,195 per person. The menu includes half a lobster and beef tenderloin with truffle. Wine, bubbles and champagne with kransekage (the Danish marzipan ring cake) cost extra, with wine pairings at DKK 495–895. The restaurant closes at 23:45, so you will be out in Nyhavn at midnight. That works well if you want the last half hour in the streets, less well if you hoped to toast at the table.

The same owner, Tholstrup, has similar New Year menus at Cap Horn and Huks Fluks in Nyhavn, and a seven-course menu at Zeleste for DKK 1,675 per person. See menus and availability on Tholstrup’s New Year page.

Dinner in Tivoli

Several Tivoli restaurants serve special New Year menus, including Glassalen, Figaro, A Hereford Beefstouw, Fru Nimb and Nimb Brasserie. Tables are booked directly with each restaurant, and not all had published their 2026 menu and price in September. For a couple, the advantage is that you can eat, watch the professional fireworks at 23:00 and walk through the illuminated gardens without crossing the city. Menus and prices are on Tivoli’s New Year’s Eve page.

Tivoli on New Year’s Eve 2026

Christmas in Tivoli 2026 runs from 13 November to 3 January, so the gardens are open on New Year’s Eve, and Tivoli has confirmed its fireworks on Thursday 31 December at 23:00. The show is included in the entry ticket. Note the time: the fireworks are an hour before midnight, so you need your own plan for the stroke of twelve, either a restaurant table in the gardens or a spot outside that you can walk to.

Christmas lights and decorations in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

Tivoli suits most people: couples who want lights and atmosphere, first-time visitors, and families who prefer a professional show to street fireworks. It suits you less if you want to stay in the same spot from 23:00 until after midnight without a restaurant booking. Check opening hours on 31 December, and whether the fireworks are cancelled in bad weather, close to the date. You can buy the entry ticket in advance via GetYourGuide. Make sure the ticket is valid for your date.

Dinner, show and party for groups

Wallmans at the Circus Building

Wallmans is the most complete package in town: entry, cloakroom, welcome drink, a screening of the King’s New Year speech, an international show, a four-course menu, prosecco and kransekage at midnight, and an afterparty until 04:00. Doors open at 16:45, you sit down at 17:30, the show runs until about 23:15 and the countdown is at 23:55. Vegetarian and vegan menus are available. Drinks with dinner are paid separately. Most tables seat six or eight, so a group of two or four will probably share a table. The minimum age on New Year’s Eve is 12, and guests under 18 must leave by 00:30.

Wallmans New Year's party at the Circus Building in Copenhagen

Choose Wallmans if your group wants the whole evening in one place. Skip it if you are a couple wanting your own table and a quiet dinner. Tickets cost from DKK 1,649 in the ring to DKK 2,549 per person for the best seats, plus a DKK 20 fee. Some categories have a restricted view of the show, so check the seating plan on Wallmans’ New Year page before picking the cheapest.

Comwell Copenhagen Portside in Nordhavn

Comwell Copenhagen Portside starts with bubbles, snacks and the King’s speech, continues with six courses and a wine pairing, and ends with a DJ in the lobby. There is champagne and kransekage at midnight, the music stops at 01:30 and the bar closes at 02:00. Dinner and party without a room costs DKK 2,750 per person. The package with a room is prepaid and, as a rule, cannot be cancelled or refunded. The Nordhavn location keeps you away from the crowds in the centre, but it is a longer trip if you want to go into town after midnight.

Bars and rooftops

Bars and hotel bars often hold ticketed New Year’s parties. Before you buy, ask whether the ticket gives you a fixed seat, whether there is a view of the fireworks, and whether the bar closes early for private events.

New Year’s events in Copenhagen: gala, concerts and parties

A New Year’s event in Copenhagen does not have to take the whole night. The concerts are on 30 December or early on the 31st, so dinner can come afterwards, with a party after midnight.

Tivoli New Year’s concert

Tivoli Copenhagen Phil plays its New Year’s concert in Tivoli’s Concert Hall on 30 December at 19:30 and on 31 December at 12:30 and 15:30. Steven Moore conducts, with singers Isabel Schwartzbach, Christian Lund and Jonas Stimose of MAGT. The programme runs from Strauss and Lumbye to West Side Story and The Merry Widow. Tickets cost DKK 275–795 and include entry to Tivoli for the whole day, so the afternoon concert on the 31st can be combined with dinner and the fireworks.

New Year’s Gala at DR Concert Hall

The Danish National Symphony Orchestra plays the New Year’s Gala 2026 under Christian Kluxen on 30 December at 15:00 and 18:30, and on 31 December at 13:00 and 16:00, with sopranos Sofie Lund and Laura Helene Hansen. The programme mixes Lumbye and Strauss with Offenbach, Bizet, Ravel and Gounod. The concert lasts about 1 hour 20 minutes, bubbles and canapés are included, and under-30s get half price with valid ID. Prices are on DR Koncerthuset’s page.

New Year’s concert at the Royal Danish Opera

The Royal Danish Orchestra plays at the Opera House on 30 December at 19:00 and on 31 December at 12:00 and 17:45, with conductor Evan Rogister, soprano Sofie Elkjær Jensen and host Ellen Hillingsø. Tickets cost DKK 255–1,495. The 17:45 performance on the 31st is the most festive: the King’s New Year speech is shown on a big screen, and there are bubbles in the interval.

Afterparty after midnight

If you had dinner at home or in a restaurant, you can still join an organised party. The Circus Building holds a New Year’s Afterparty on 1 January 2027 from 00:30 to 04:00 with a DJ. The minimum age is 25 and tickets cost DKK 195 via Tickster. Clubs and hotel bars had not published 2026 programmes in September, so only buy when the organiser sells tickets itself. You can also browse bookable experiences in Copenhagen.

Hotels and overnight packages

If you are visiting from abroad or want to avoid the night bus, a hotel with its own New Year’s event is the safest choice.

Copenhagen Marriott Hotel on Kalvebod Brygge has announced a New Year’s Eve dinner and party in its function rooms overlooking the harbour. Check the menu, programme and price on the hotel’s own website before booking. A standard room does not automatically include the party; the two are usually booked separately.

Tivoli Hotel has previously offered two concepts with one night’s stay: Columbine, with a starter and New Year buffet in Tivoli Brasserie, which suits families, and Harlequin, with five courses on the 11th floor, for adults. Last year the evening started at 18:00 with the King’s speech in the foyer and dinner at 18:30, and both packages included champagne and kransekage at midnight, breakfast and late check-out. The hotel says the 2026 programme is still being prepared, that taking part requires a room booking, and that the price depends on the room category, so you need a quote from the hotel.

For a regular room within walking distance of where you celebrate, compare availability early. Prices around 31 December rise as the date approaches.

Book your stay for New Year’s Eve

Hotels and tickets are what sell out first. Book them before you plan the rest of the evening.

New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen with kids

With small children, the calm options work best: Tivoli and home before the biggest crowds, an early restaurant seating, or a hotel with a family package such as Tivoli Hotel’s buffet concept described above.

City Hall Square, Queen Louise’s Bridge and the busiest parts of Nyhavn are not suitable for small children around midnight.

Free places to be at midnight

As of September 2026, no large municipal fireworks show has been announced in Copenhagen. What you see from the public spaces is mainly private fireworks. Wear safety glasses, even as a spectator.

City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen)

The traditional gathering place, where thousands count down to the chimes of the City Hall clock. The atmosphere is loud and intense, and a lot of fireworks are set off close to people. Arrive early, agree on a meeting point in case you get separated, and pick somewhere else if you dislike crowds.

Christmas tree in front of Copenhagen City Hall on City Hall Square

Queen Louise’s Bridge (Dronning Louises Bro)

The bridge between the city centre and Nørrebro is popular with young locals. The fireworks reflect in the Lakes, but the bridge gets packed and people set off fireworks on it too. A pick for groups of friends, not for families or couples looking for calm.

Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv

The natural choice if you have had dinner in the area. The metro at Kongens Nytorv is close, but the streets get very crowded just before midnight.

Islands Brygge and the harbour front

More space and an open view over the harbour. A good compromise for couples and friends with their own bottle of bubbles. Wear warm, windproof clothes: standing still by the water is cold.

Christiansborg Tower

The tower is free and has one of the best views over the city, but it closes in the evening and is not a place to be at midnight. Use it for the view earlier in the day, and check opening hours on 31 December with Christiansborg first.

Fireworks rules in Denmark

The rules were tightened from New Year 2024/25. Private individuals may now only set off fireworks on 31 December and 1 January. Fireworks are sold in shops from 15 to 31 December and cannot be sold to anyone under 18. Municipalities can also ban fireworks in certain areas. The rules are explained (in Danish) on borger.dk.

The Danish Safety Technology Authority’s advice is the familiar one: wear safety glasses, buy only legal fireworks, never hold lit fireworks in your hand, and never approach a dud. More at Sikkerhedsstyrelsen.

Getting around on New Year’s Eve

  • S-trains: usually run to a special timetable on 31 December, with night trains all night, typically every 20 minutes.
  • Metro: runs 24 hours, with fewer departures at night, normally about every 20 minutes on the night between Thursday and Friday.
  • Buses: run to a Saturday timetable on New Year’s Eve, with diversions around the big gathering places.

The 2026/27 timetables are not published yet, so check Rejseplanen and DSB shortly before. Buy your ticket before the evening, expect queues after midnight, and agree in advance how you will get back. Arriving by plane?
